Encrypted During Communication

The technology behind secure connections is via encryption applied to all the data transmitted between the two devices, basically your interaction with the server. Like right now with this website. There should be a lock in the browser address bar, just before the URL, to indicate a secure and encrypted connection.

Sensitive Data

It uses encryption algorithms to scramble the data transmitted between the two devices, preventing any intruder from reading this data.  This data or information could be any sensitive data like your password, credit card numbers and other financial information, names, and addresses etc. It needs to be secure at all times.

TLS is just an updated, more secure, version of SSL. We still refer to our security certificates as SSL because it is a more commonly used term.
